Case Study - Allport Cargo Services

Allport Cargo Services (ACS) are a global supply chain and logistics company, firmly established as one of the UK’s leading independent freight forwarders. Like RRS, their culture has always been to make customers’ lives simpler.

They approached us ahead of a move to the Coalville area of Leicestershire where they planned to open a 130,000 ft2 distribution centre in April 2017.

In line with their peak period which extended from June to December, they were keen to recruit temporary and seasonal agency workers including warehouse operatives, pickers, packers and forklift drivers.


The challenge

As they were new to the area, ASC’s management needed advice and guidance on where and how to source the candidates that they needed. This is where our local knowledge and expertise came in.

Specifically, they were looking for support with order picking, packing and distributing of retail and online orders (up to 20,000 a day in peak periods) to fulfil the requirement from Parragon Books and Smiggle.

Timeframes were vital as they needed to honour deadlines from their own clients and respond to market demand, peaking on Black Friday. Coupled with the logistics of moving up to the new site, they needed to feel confident about their chosen partner.


Our approach

We immediately assigned an experienced Account Management team to this client. Making the most of our existing network of candidates, we got to work with tried and tested candidate attraction techniques including flyers that were placed in the local area in combination with a digital approach via social media platforms.

To save time and increase productivity on site, we also created a bespoke induction pack that we briefed to prospective candidates – it included information about the company’s security procedures, Health & Safety protocol, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) requirements as well as a basic numeracy and literacy test.

We pride ourselves on being a safe pair of hands for our clients. As well as sourcing candidates, our partnership extended to providing industry expertise and insight, for example, salary benchmarking including overtime rates and employee benefits.


Successful outcomes

For seasonal work, we leveraged media coverage in the form of press releases and offered free transport from Leicester city centre to align with shift start and finish times. We also provided PPE free of charge.

This wasn’t just about providing quality people for a targeted recruitment drive. Our remit was to offer wider support as well as an advisory service. Thanks to our experience and trusted network, we were able to recommend and negotiate with third party providers to supply and install a cutting edge timekeeping and attendance system at Allport.

We were also heavily involved with their retail audit and helped the team develop and implement effective policies to combat forced labour, slavery and human trafficking within their business and supply chain.

This is what we delivered:

  • The most successful peak period that stationery giant Smiggle have ever experienced with ACS, culminating on Black Friday.
  • More than 50 of the staff we initially introduced are now working permanently on site.
  • Onsite check ins for more than shifts of more than 30 (including the Managing Director for the three busiest weeks of the year!)

During their peak period, we successfully supplied 150 temporary agency workers across various shift patterns. Our client had peace of mind that these workers were all fully compliant with industry regulations and familiar with the pre-site induction that they were given as part of their registration.

To date, we have placed 778 people at Allport and will continue to support them as required.
